Is road biking dangerous?

As an adventure sport, road biking does have its risks. However, the trip has been designed to avoid large, busy roads and we ride mostly on small two-lane NC highways. There will also be medically trained guides among the riders.

How and how much will I fundraise?

The acceptance packet includes a comprehensive list of strategies and suggestions. Support letters are one of the great ways to raise money and awareness among friends and family.

We are going through my city or town; can I spend a day with my family?

The trip is very flexible, but it is best to address individual schedule questions with the trip leader.

Can my Lance-esque friend join us for one day?

No, sorry.

Where will we sleep?

Most nights will be spent in churches or community centers, the majority of them being what we affectionately call ‘rustic’.

Is food included?

Each day 3 meals will be included. Breakfast will range from cereal and bananas to eggs and bacon. Lunch will be delicious sandwiches. Dinner will be cooked at the day’s ending point. Some snacks/energy bars will be supplied.

Will we all stay in a pack?

Probably not. Riders will take off at when they wish after breakfast. Small groups of two to four riders often ride close to one another. The lunch will then be set up about half way to the next stop. Group leaders will be at the middle and end of the whole group in case anyone needs assistance. Take your time, enjoy the open country roads, stop in small town stores, and just make sure you make it to lunch and dinner at the predetermined times.

What if I get lost?

Each morning you will receive and we will together review directions for the day’s ride. These guides, along with your NC map, will be very helpful in finding your direction should you go astray. You can also call the support vehicle’s cell phone for assistance at any time, or locate one of the guides in the middle and at the end of the pack.

How far will we ride each day?

The average mileage will be between 60 and 80 miles each day. Some days will be shorter and some longer.

The last time I did physical activity I was cut from the 7th grade cheerleading squad. Can I still come?

Your trip will be challenging physically and thus it is important to train beforehand. The beginning fitness level is crucial to your experience. If you start without having trained adequately, you will have a much tougher first week. The acceptance packet will include various training suggestions/schedules for you to work with prior to the ride.

How will gear get from place to place?

We will have a support vehicle to transfer gear. The drivers will set up lunch ahead of the riders.

Do I need my own bike?

Yes, and it should be a road bike. If you are looking for a bike let us know and we will do our best to help you find an affordable ride. For a start, check craigslist and local bike shops for used bikes.

What if I raise too much money?

The first money that comes in will go toward your contribution to your chosen NC nonprofit. Any funds beyond that can pay your program fee. Any money beyond that will also be given to the nonprofit you have chosen.

What happens after I apply?

We review your application, follow up with references, and notify you if you have been accepted. We will send you an acceptance packet and then call to talk specifically about general logistics and the fundraising details for the months before your trip. From that point we will be available for any questions, aside from perpetual updates on deadlines, preparation tips, and other important details.
